Target 1. Reducing carbon dioxide by 20 percent

Since 2001, SCA has worked actively to reduce emissions from fossil fuels. In 2008, SCA further raised its ambition and introduced a new quantified CO2 target that requires the Group to reduce emissions from fossil fuels by 20% by the year 2020, using 2005 as a reference year.

Results in 2009

At year-end 2009, carbon emissions had declined by 2.2% relative to the production level.

Example: 900 energy-efficiency programmes

Turn off the light when leaving - Use the electricity timer - Keep the heat inside

In recent years, SCA’s ESAVE energy-efficiency programme has demonstrated positive development. Since its launch in 2002, more than 900 projects have been carried out. The accumulated saving effects since its initiation in 2002 are estimated at 600 GWh of electricity and 1,000 GWh of heat on an annual basis. In financial terms, this corresponds to EUR 50m per year. During 2009, 350 projects have been implemented, resulting in an estimated avoided cost of about EUR 8m. More examples are available in our We lifecycle! brochure and in SCA's Sustainability report 2009.

Driving forces

The climate issue is one of most critical environmental and social issues facing the world today. Background factors include the following:

  • According to the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the earth’s average sea and surface temperatures continue to rise. This increase is attributed to emissions of greenhouse
    gases resulting from human activities.
  • Trading in emission rights has been introduced in the EU and, in New Zealand, a similar system is being planned.
  • In the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement aimed at reducing global emissions of greenhouse gases was reached.
